Questions
Frequently asked questions
Your files
Do my videos go to a server?
No. Spoel works entirely in your browser, with the video and audio components your browser already has. Your files stay on your own device. Technically, the site does not allow any outgoing connections.
Why does Spoel sometimes load something?
Spoel only loads the heavy components (for reading and writing video, and for making MP3 and AAC) when you need them, from our own site. That is fetching, never sending.
Do I need to create an account?
No. No account, no email address, no cookies to follow you.
The tools
Is it really free?
Yes. No watermark, no limit on how often, no ads. Spoel is a free tool by nealvdv, part of Handig.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes, in a recent browser. Converting and compressing recreate every frame; on a computer that is a lot faster than on a phone.
Which formats does Spoel know?
Video: MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV, with H.264, HEVC, VP8, VP9 or AV1 if your browser can read them. Audio: MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus and FLAC. Spoel makes MP4, WebM, MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A and GIF.
Limits
How large can my files be?
Up to 500 MB per file. To trim or normalize audio, Spoel loads the whole recording into memory, up to about 40 minutes.
Why does it not work in my browser?
For video, Spoel needs your browser’s video components (WebCodecs). They are in a recent Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave and Samsung Internet, in Safari from 16.4 and in Firefox from 130. Not every browser can read some iPhone videos (HEVC).
Can I edit any video or song?
Spoel checks nothing; it only works on your device. Do only use recordings you hold the rights to yourself, or that you have permission for.
