We want everyone to be able to use Spoel: with a mouse, keyboard or screen reader, on a large or small screen. Here you can read what we do to make that happen.

Our standard

We build to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA, the standard behind the European Accessibility Act (EN 301 549). We test with the keyboard, at 360 pixels wide and at 200% zoom.

What we do

Every page has a clear structure with headings, a link to skip straight to the content, a visible focus for keyboard users, fields with labels and error messages next to the field itself, enough colour contrast in both the light and the dark view, and respect for your device’s “reduce motion” setting. Progress and results are read aloud.

Reading comfort

With the button with the little figure at the top of every page, you choose larger text, more space between lines and letters, a readable font, more contrast, underlined links, less motion or a reading guide. Your choice is saved on your device.

What is not perfect yet

Everything you can drag also works without a mouse: you choose a file with “Choose a file”, the handles on the timeline are sliders you move with the arrow keys, and you can type the times. The thumbnails on the timeline and the waveform are decoration: a screen reader reads out the times, not the pictures. Videos keep the subtitles they already had; Spoel does not create any itself.
